(OOC Note- all information on this page is based on IC knowledge and assumptions, and thus may be inaccurate).

Suiríoch
Heretic Ritualist

Former student of the Arcane College, noted as a gifted Ritualist who was expelled for radical theories and research projects. The name is still used as a pseudonym by students and teachers who wish to publish potentially damaging papers without their own name attached.

The real Suiríoch has been a thorn in the side of the Band for years, providing foul rituals to criminals that we had to prevent or undo, and manipulating us into acquiring magical components through a proxy named Luíseach. Amongst these components are the Scorpion Grass supplies in Bruid for her ritual on the Steps and the pelts of Uasan Water Rats to make robes with warding magics on them.

On The Shaper’s Steps she attempted to conduct a ritual to bring back her former lovers, despite the barriers of both death and Candling. The ritual was prevented from being successfully completed by the Band, at great cost in lives, though Suiríoch managed to bring back three of her four former lovers as undead abominations and escape the Steps.

Those interested in hunting Suiríoch or that may have information pertaining to her can contact the Reconnaissance Office, Rígan Diavall or Faoiltighearna. It has been confirmed she has returned to the mainland and now wish to bring her revenge against the Cinnirí whom she appear to believe stood in their way. The Order of Necromancers has been warned but when she left the Steps she had a sizeable force of fungal zombies and wrathful spirits along with the three entities she has returned hereafter termed: Loveless.

Feidghlim Mac Róbín
Infamous Bandit Chief

A Firetouched bandit leader, believed to be from Orohogar. Mac Róbín has quite a reputation amongst the ne’er-do-wells of Tirneach, and even just rumours of his presence can cause an increase in crime as local criminals seek to impress him and perhaps be recruited to his band.

Cumhacht na Réig have faced Mac Róbín on multiple occasions, successfully dispatching his bandit followers during every encounter, though unfortunately Mac Róbín has managed to elude us each time. He has demonstrated a unnatural resistance to effects that would disable even a Gallóglaigh, leading some to theorize he has made a deal with some of the spirits of his homeland in return for powerful gifts.

He was last seen passing through the gullet after a battle at the camp while half of the forces were away on another mission and where he was able to call consistent back ups from the forces he had following him. Similarly int he prior encounter when he lost a duel to Alessandro he fled into the midst of his force's ranks and cowered there while people healed him. He took prisoners and now binds them having been tricked once before - these prisoners are used for leverage so he may secure his own escape. He is more than willing to leave his minions behind or to die if he can save himself.

Those interested in investigating the truth of these rumors or just helping the Band apprehend this criminal can contact the Reconnaissance Office.

Malacht Ua Finian
Immortal Undead Abomination

Malacht is a creature that resembles a Leasiar, but we believe is something much more unnatural. Originally trapped in a magical prison constructed in the distant past but most recently modified by servants of the ruling council of Draíod, The Saoi, Malacht was unfortunately released by The Band. An interrogation found that they had been trapped for a significant amount of time, likely centuries, and magic showed them to be Undead, though they were as coherent and rational as any living mortal. When they became aggressive their merest touch proved devastating to mortals, and when the sky contained neither sun nor stars they simply turned into mist and vanished.

Recent reports have mentioned a figure matching Malacht’s description attending the most exclusive parties in Siabhal, even those of rivals who would wish little to do with the friends of their enemies. As the creature’s name implies some connection to the greatest of the Hundred Heroes, their leader Finian, it seems it has some connection to the Heart of the Realms.

Those interested in trying to determine what kind of creature Malacht is, seeking to aid us in tracking them down or perhaps even trying to establish what their goals might be can contact the Reconnaissance Office.

Tiernan McUltan
Insane Peaceslayer

Known as Tiernan The Mad, he leads a band of Peaceslayers, those that have killed a Peacesworn. He has convinced dozens of Peaceslayers to follow him with the promise that he can break the curse upon their souls that reveals their crimes to any that see them.

So far his method to break this curse appears to be through murdering Cinnire, and it has proven entirely unsuccessful. His band is also responsible for the slaughter of entire villages in Bruid- there is no reason to believe he has any intention beyond death and chaos, and it is likely he is simply manipulating his followers by promising redemption.

We managed to capture one of his followers in Bruid, and while they seemed to genuinely believe in Tiernan and wanted to get rid of their Slayer’s Mark, they were oddly unquestioning of Tiernan’s own actions and motives.

Those with information on Tiernan and his cultists, or are interested in looking into them, can contact the Reconnaissance Office, Rígan Diavall or Sorrel Airiúgladh.

Bush Monster
Relentless Hunter

A creature of unknown origin and composition, though theorised to be a Primeval. The creature first appeared in Bruid, and is devastatingly powerful, capable of incapacitating multiple members of the Band at once with powerful magics, such as Sleep. It seems to focus on a specific target, considering all others in its way to be little more than a hindrance to be bypassed, though that does not reduce the threat it represents to those that face it- we lost one of our number, Smeagol, to the creature in Draíod, as he alone was able to resist its magicks and eventually fell to its strikes.

Those with any insight into the Bush Monster or who wish to try discover more about it can contact the Reconnaissance Office.

Firean: reformatted

Adoption is a common practice in Tirneach, as there have always been many title or property holding
individuals and couples who cannot produce heirs unaided.

How Adoption Works
To have an adoption formally recognised the
adoptee (who could be a child or an adult) and the adopter (who must be an adult) are required to go before
their Iarla and make solemn declarations. The adoptee must renounce any and all claims to the property and
titles of their birth family and the adopter must accept the responsibility of a parent for the conduct of their
new child. Following this there is no legal or social distinction between a child born into or adopted into a
family.

Social Implications
Amongst those who place a high value on lineage, such as the Ruby Families of Siabhal, insinuating that there
ought be a distinction made, or that adopted children are not truly of the family is socially disastrous. All of
the Ruby Families have at one time or another relied on adoption to continue their legacies and an attack on
the legitimacy of a single adopted heir is considered an attack on all.

Many families without inheritance to worry about practice informal adoption, as an audience with the Iarla
may be more trouble than it is worth to them. It is considered an attack tantamount to the theft of the child
to adopt someone who has been given as a hostage to your family. Finally, it is a contentious but not unheard
of practice for the head of a household to adopt an heir more pleasing to them if they are completely
unsatisfied with the ones nature has provided to them.

A graduate of the Arcane College, they maintain a keen interest in protective magics and the practicalities of Arcane and Necromantic rituals.
Firéan, among others, provided seed capital for the fledgling brewery, Wildling and Wilder. The crisp and refreshing Firean's Fancy can be found across certain taverns across Tirneach, wherever fine Wildling and Wilder ales are sold. Their more notable achievement during the Season was acting as bait for a prized bull.
In 788, led by Maeláine, they joined the Siege of Lobhan. Members of this band infiltrated the town, and found something within that led Maeláine to order its burning.

Never formally decommissioned after Maeláine took the crown, during the Season of Uncertainty the regent recognised Aster Ua Larkspur as the standing Thane of that band. Letters were posted in many towns and villages claimeing that Aster had been given authority over all Gallóglaigh who had been separated from their bands, who were ordered to join her to receive further orders. The letters also specified that any Gallóglach travelling to meet Aster was to do all they could to ensure the safety of the roads and outlying settlements as they travelled. The orders did not specify Aster’s location.

Many initially took the orders to be a hoax or perhaps some kind of trap but the Regent did nothing to disavow Aster’s claim to authority and as the months went on “members” of the Golden Knives began to be seen wandering the roads of Tirneach. Always on their way to meet their Thane and always watchful for threats overlooked by the capitals, both supernatural and mundane.

Firean: /* Year 0 TR - The arrival of the Réig */

This page provides a brief description of major historical events, together with events relevant to the band Cumhacht na Réig.

Time in Five Oaths is usually measured in years from the arrival of the first Réig to the shores of Tirneach (Teacht an Réig or TR)

Before Year 0 TR
Prior to the arrival of the Réig to Tirneach, the land was largely overrun by the Gwyllt. During this time:
*The people of Siabhal relied upon a host of great heroes to defend its people from the Gwyllt, though their society was not stable due to the influence of the Gwyllt causing traitors to emerge from their midst.
*Draíod kept to their underground caverns, sharing learning with Siabhal but otherwise not engaging with the surface world.
*The people of Baol relied upon the fell bargains made by the lady of the Amber Hall with the Gwyllt to survive, though the Amber Hall itself fell more than a hundred years before the arrival of the Réig.
*The people of Uasa harnessed water spirits for their protection
*The lands of Bruid were overrun by the great forest and impassable to all but the Gwyllt and their servants.

Year 0 TR - The arrival of the Réig
For more detail on this time, and what came before, please see the Réig

The Réig arrived in Tirneach from across the Shaper's Sea (or the Howling Sea as it was known) together with the first Gallóglaigh bands, traversing the sea upon a great land bridge - the remains of which are known as the Shaper's Steps.

The Siabhalaigh viewed the arrival of the Réig as an invasion and attacked, eager to defeat the invaders. The Gallóglaigh of the Réig were hard pressed, for the Réig had made clear the children of Tirneach were not their enemy. However, they received aid from an likely source, as the people of Uasa came to their aid.

The people of Uasa gave the Réig and their Gallóglaigh shelter and hospitality and soon they were the Réig's staunchest allies in Tirneach and gave the Réig their title.

Upon becoming aware of the Réig's arrival, the Saoi of Draíod posed a challenge to them and, upon its completion, they too swore allegiance to the Réig.

A short time after this, the Siabhalaigh marched to the borders of Uasa, opposed by the followers of the Réig. The Réig sought to bring peace between them, but their armies were assailed by the Gwyllt. In seeing the Réig's prowess and the skill of their cause, the Siabhalaigh joined forces, seeing in the Réig the characteristics of their hundred heroes of old. It was on that battlefield that the great forces of the Gwyllt were broken and the dark pall of their influence driven back.

The combined armies of Uasa, Siabhal and Draíod soon brought Baol into the fold, without much opposition as Baol did not have a unified leadership at that time.

Once the four realms had been united, the Réig declared that a new realm, Bruid, would be created from the wilderness and tasked the first Iarla of Bruid with reclaiming it with the aid of the Gallóglaigh.

In time the first Réig died. In the times since many Réig have succeeded the first.

Recent History
Year 711 TR
Leamh The Long Lived was declared Réig. She ruled for forty years and enacted the Great Design, which reclaimed large swathes of land from the swamps and rivers of Uasa.

Year 751 TR
The Time of Tumult began, seeing an unprecedented three Réigs in ten years, none of whom served for longer than five years.

Year 761 TR
Duarcan the Grim, head of House Roaring Thunder, became Regent for six years following the sudden death of the previous Réig. He brought the Time of Tumult to an end and ruled with an iron fist, holding the Iarla of the realms hostage until finally organizing a grand tourney to select the next Réig.

Year 767 TR
Seocha Uí Chonchobhair was declared Réig. One of her first acts was to depose Duarcan the Grim and install a new head of House Roaring Thunder.

Year 777 TR
Airt Ua Chonchobhair was declared Réig. He was characterised by a thirst for knowledge and holding academic ideals above all others.

Year 790 TR - The Coronation of Maeláine Uí Chonchobhair
In the year 790, Maeláine Uí Chonchobhair was declared Réig following the sudden death of their uncle Airt Ua Chonchobhair. Maeláine secured their claim to the throne by a duel to the death with their cousin.

Year 797 TR - A time of Loyalty and Seeking
The band Cumhact na Réig was formed.

Following the swearing of their oaths in Corroch, during the Season of Loyalty, they conducted their first missions as Gallóglaigh and upon the Réig's direction helped to put down an uprising by Riverborn heretics of Uasa.

The second mission that Cumhacht na Réig undertook was to protect the great cattle-mart of Baol during the Season of Seeking. There, they defeated the Bluehand Band, who had been hired to disrupt the running of the mart, and protected the reputation of the Rider Duardo Ortega Mera.

Year 798-799 TR - A time of Uncertainty
For more details on the period of 798 to 800 TR, please see Seasons of Uncertainty

During a trip to the Shaper's Steps, Maeláine Uí Chonchobhair was attacked and was killed. Without a named heir, or a clear successor, the lands of Tirneach were thrown into turmoil.

The Regent, Cian Treebreaker, head of House Roaring Thunder, called all Gallóglaigh to return to Corroch to act as a peacekeeping force to allow for the appointment of a new Réig. Cian Treebreaker was assassinated by the Riverborn. The post of Regent, and head of House Roaring Thunder, was taken up by Tiergan took up the leadership of House Roaring Thunder. Tiergan, together with those Gallóglaigh who had answered the call of the Regent, managed to stave off an attempt by adherents of the Breaker Heresy to kill the Prelates of the Church of the Shaper and the remaining members of House Roaring Thunder.

At this time, Mairi of Clann Niamha, claimed that they were the new Réig and that the Lowlands of Baol belonged to the highlands, causing a civil war to break out. A number of Gallóglaigh supported Iarla Dalles of Baol in opposing Mairi's claim. Rider Tiernan Mac Aonghusa rallied opposition against Mairi and cornered them at the battle of the Scarlet Heather. During the battle Tiernan Mac Aonghusa killed Mairi, and a number of her key supporters were also killed, the remainder surrendering soon after.

Meanwhile, a large host of Gwyllt assailed Ardbealach in Draíod - in particular the ritual circle outside of Ardbealach. The assault turned into a protracted siege, which was only alleviated when the Gwyllt relented in their assault following a minor shift in the leylines which caused a temporary disempowerment of the ritual circles near Ardbealach. During the siege, a Weeping Fathach by the name of Amhlaoibh was rescued by a number of Weeping members of Cumhacht na Réig from a secluded laboratory of a Linebreaker Vartach. Amhlaoibh was found by the Saoi of Draíod to bear a mark of Destiny.

The Regent and the Iarlas of the five realms issued an edict for Gallóglaigh of all bands to travel to a capital of one of the realms to ensure safety and stability while a new Réig was appointed.

During the Summer of 799, there was a resurgence of Gwyllt activity, resulting in major attacks upon each of Tirneach's five realms:
*In Uasa, a group called Lobhan's Legacy murdered several Uasaigh Riders and there was significant unrest following exposure to a newly discovered type of Gwyllt, a one-eyed fish. Notably, the one-eyed Gwyllt fish caused paranoia and were capable of merging into larger amalgams - a gigantic version of which assaulted Corroch and was only turned back by the Gallóglaigh stationed there.
*In Siabhal, severe Gwyllt attacks were experienced and this caused several ridings to become isolated and cut off from the realm as a whole. A Major Assault on Barr by a Gwyllt resembling a large tower almost resulted in the death of the Iarla of Siabhal, and candidate for Réig, Éaltna Ní Órfhaiche. Meanwhile, an assault by the Gwyllt upon Iomra caused the destruction of one of its three towers. The attacks caused shortages of supplies, although this did not rise to the level of famine in Siabhal.
*In Baol, the presence of a Gwyllt imposter caused significant unrest after it facilitated an attack upon Uaircinn which included an assassination attempt upon Tiernan MacAonghusa. The heirs of the highlands of Baol's courtly Clanns began to receive visions of the Amber Hall promising a lost power to help defeat the Gwyllt, only to meet their deaths and become undead abominations.
*In Draíod, Cragg Oscionn experienced severe flooding after water was found to be leaking into several tunnels near the Arcane College. Gallóglaigh present there assisted with the recue and recovery efforts and helped to root out and defeat both Undead and Gwyllt who were discovered in the surrounding areas.
*In Bruid, the increase of Gwyllt activity (most notably Knochenbriseadh and Wenigadaí) required the aid of a significant number of Gallóglaigh to repel, together with the assistance of a pilgrimage to Bruid from Shlachtfeld. The borders of the great forest advanced northward to within sight of the south walls of Caraoic.

Year 800 TR - A time of Renewal
Tiergan, Head of House Roaring Thunder, declared that the Réig would be the winner of a duel between Éaltna Ní Órfhaiche and Tiernan MacAonghusa. At the appointed hour for the duel, Éaltna conceded the duel to Tiernan, declaring they had received a vision from the Shaper the night before and they believed that Tiernan was the rightful Réig of Tirneach. With that, Tiernan MacAonghusa was crowned Réig.

The Thane of Cumhact na Réig, Declan Ó Ceallaigh, retired, replaced by Thane Ualgarg Corcra on the Réig's orders, a Drakeblooded Torchbearer who had been the Cinnire-at-Arms of White Eye’s Band. Orders were given for Cumhacht na Réig to assemble under their Thane in Barr.

The Band was enlisted to help Iarla Éaltna Ní Órfhaiche in dealing with hunting down a Heffa Wyllt in the Grey Lands in Siabhal, near the border of Uasa. In addition, they were entrusted with the task of uncovering the purpose behind mysterious groups of armed individuals moving around between the Ridings in the area and in doing so they uncovered a conspiracy amongst a number of the Riders of the area to usurp the Iarla's authority - and arrested the perpetrators.

Firean: /* The Réig Today */

The Réig' is the high ruler of Tirneach in the time of the game of Five Oaths.

Before the Réig
The Shaper created the world and all the species that walk upon the world’s surface. Their great act of Shaping the world out of the Void attracted the attention of the Gwyllt, terrible creatures from beyond space and time whose domain preys upon the domain of the world. The Shaper fought with the Gwyllt to keep them from devouring the world altogether. Unfortunately while this titanic cosmic battle was being waged, the Gwyllt’s lesser servants were able to infiltrate the Shaper’s creation.

The Gwyllt hate the Shaper, Their creation and Their children. Everywhere the Gwyllt spread upon the surface of the world they corrupted and twisted the Shaper’s work. The children of the Shaper are strong-willed, and most of them did not fall for the lies of the Gwyllt, but those that did were granted the corrupting powers of the Gwyllt and used them to oppress and hurt their kin. Nowhere was this more pronounced than on the peninsula of Tirneach.

In Tirneach, the kingdom of Siabhal maintained a heroic tradition of great warriors that defended the people against the Gwyllt, but their society was constantly on the brink of being torn apart by traitors that would bargain with the Gwyllt to keep themselves or those they loved safe for another year. The Saoi of Draíod kept to their caverns, lending their wisdom to Siabhal but never willing to help them to fully defeat the Gwyllt in case they were left weakened and fell to the Gwyllt themselves. In Baol, the lord and lady of the Amber Hall made fell bargains to protect their people, for a cost that came due in the end. The tribes of Uasa were driven into the badlands and swamps by the Gwyllt. There, they harnessed the powers of the water spirits – elemental forces remaining from the Shaping of the world – and recited the prophecies of the Réig to keep the darkness away. Beyond the Ring Mountains to the south no mortal dared trespass; the Great Forest was dark and impenetrable to all but the Gwyllt and their servants.

The advent of the Réig
The Gwyllt were not unknown beyond Tirneach. Across what is now called the Shaper’s Sea but was then called the Howling Sea, mortal people had long gathered together to protect themselves and others, and these had grown into the disparate nation states and fiefdoms of the Eastern Reaches. The strong and warlike among these nations grew rich and powerful, and began to demand more and more from those they were supposed to protect. The weak who could not or would not serve the strong were condemned as being in league with the Gwyllt, and war or false judgements were brought against them as penalty, and their children taken from them as hostages not to secure peace but to reinforce punishment, in a cruel twist on age-old tradition. There were those in the Eastern Reaches that spoke of the Shaper, and the higher purpose They intended for all mortal kind, but they were drowned out by the cacophony of warfare and oppression.

In this time, approximately eight centuries before the present day, a child was born into a household that held to the ways of the Shaper, and tried to honour Them in word and deed. This meant they did not relentlessly hoard wealth or military power at the expense of all else like their rivals, and they fell foul of the machinations of an enemy household before the child could finish their schooling. As had become custom, many of the children of the household, nobles and servants alike, were taken as hostages. Ostensibly this would answer for the imagined insult offered by their house, but truly it would just enrich and embolden their rivals.

The victors were soon troubled however by the presence of one of the children in their house. Where they would have expected a cowed and defeated youngster, instead their halls rang with talk of the Shaper. The servants and the other children of the house hung on the child’s every word, and wondered whether there was a better way. The house elders were furious, and summoned the child to their great hall, but soon even they were swayed by the child’s wise words.

The child grew towards adulthood, and word of both them and the Shaper spread throughout the Eastern Reaches. Other warlords scoffed at this, and said that the child’s foster household had grown soft. But they could not defeat them in the battlefield or in the baronial halls. The foster household became even more influential, but it was a more measured and sustainable progression, not the rampant greed of years before.

The child became an adult, and announced that the Shaper had spoken to them in their dreams. This was nothing new, but now instead of simply imparting the Shaper’s teachings, the Shaper had a new mission for them. They would travel across the Howling Sea, and take up the name foretold in prophecy: Réig.

Word of the Réig’s mission spread throughout the Eastern Reaches, and soon they had a flock of warriors young and old looking to join up, thinking of plunder and personal advancement mainly. The Réig, along with their trusted foster siblings, stood before them and had this great host commit to the first swearing of the Five Oaths, with words that came from the Shaper Themself. This disorganised rabble were bound together in that moment into the gallóglaigh bands, bound to each other and bound to the Réig.

Together they looked across the Howling Sea towards Tirneach, a land held firm in the Gwyllt’s grasp.

The Réig had formed their loyal bands of gallóglaigh, and proclaimed they would conquer Tirneach in the name of the Shaper. There still remained the issue of getting there. The sea between Tirneach and the Eastern Reaches was known in those days as the Howling Sea, named for the terrible roars and wails that were heard on the waves, and only the foolish would traverse it. Deep beneath the waves the Gwyllt spawn roiled and heaved, and those ships they did not devour were lured onto rocks by their more beguiling minions. But the Réig did not propose to set sail.

Calling upon the power of the Shaper Themself, that same power used to create the world at the beginning of time, the Réig stood on the shore and raised their hands to the sky. Gigantic rocks began to rain down over the Howling Sea, and created a land bridge which the Réig’s armies could use to cross the Howling Sea by foot. The Gwyllt’s minions rose up in fury and crawled onto the bridge, but the Réig’s forces struck them down. A titanic creature from the darkest depths stood in the Réig’s way but the Réig’s mere word and glance was enough to melt the flesh from its bones. Those who followed the Réig said in later times they were never more sure of the Réig’s power than in those days, as the army crossed the Howling Sea.

As the armies of the gallóglaigh made their crossing, the land bridge began to fall apart under the onslaught of the sea and the Gwyllt creatures behind them, driven into a frenzy at the Shaper’s influence. Over the years almost every trace has disappeared, except for at the very end of their crossing, where the largest sky rocks had fallen. They are known today as the Shaper’s Steps, in memory of the Réig’s crossing. The Howling Sea was tamed as the Réig and their gallóglaigh slaughtered the most venerable and dangerous of the Gwyllt monsters, and now we call it the Shaper’s Sea.

After many days of marching through danger and glory, the host of the Réig finally stood upon the shore of Tirneach itself, a land beset by the Gwyllt. They knew now their foe could bleed and die, and had been seasoned on the land bridge. Tirneach lay in fear, both from the Gwyllt and from the terrible rain of stone that had preceded their arrival. Soon the land would rejoice.

Siabhal Stands Alone
In those days, the Realms as we know them today were very different. The Great Forest came all the way up to the Ring Mountains, and the Gwyllt’s creatures roamed everywhere while the children of the Shaper lived in fear. Baol was a desperate place. The Amber Hall had fallen a century or more before, and the people had only legend and toil to sustain them. The Saoi of Draíod maintained their caverns as a fortress, rarely bothering with the outside world while they delved into their secrets. Uasa was so dank and grey that not even the Gwyllt wanted to go there. Siabhal, properly called the Kingdom of Siabhal, was the only place with some element of civilisation.

The Siabhlaigh had long fought against the Gwyllt. Their kingdom was founded by Finian the Brave, preeminent among the Hundred Heroes who freed their people from the crushing tyranny of the Gwyllt. The descendants of the Hundred Heroes, to this day called the Ruby Families, prided themselves in their martial ability and magical prowess, exterminating the Gwyllt wherever they found them or dying in the attempt. They were heroic, but they were also fallible. Even the Ruby Families, long inured to the Gwyllt’s foul sorcery, were not immune to the lure of power and wealth which the Gwyllt’s most insidious agents could offer them, and for every ten scions of a storied house there would be one name that none dared mention, save as a curse. The intrigue and scheming that make up Siabhlach society today were not absent either, and at times the entire Kingdom almost toppled not because of the Gwyllt but because of the Siabhlach proclivity for politics.

It was on the eastern coast of Siabhal that the Réig and their forces first made landfall, in what is now the Grey Marches, the borderlands between Siabhal and Uasa. News of their arrival had preceded them, and as the first gallóglaigh made landfall they were ambushed by a host of warriors. The warriors were led by Princess Seasmain of Siabhal, fearsome and warlike in her plate armour, and wearing the helm of Finian the Brave himself. They saw the Réig’s forces as unwelcome invaders come to take what they had spent so many centuries defending, and strove to drive them into the sea or drive them back across the land bridge. The gallóglaigh defended themselves, but the Réig had given orders that the mortal children of the Shaper in Tirneach were not their enemy, and in the confusion many died.

The Siabhlaigh were frustrated in their attack by an unlikely occurrence. Hailstones the size of a human head began to rain upon them, driving them back into their place of hiding and pursuing them even as they left the field of battle. The source of this strange phenomenon was soon made clear, as a force of Uasaigh appeared and offered aid to the shaken forces of the Réig. Their shamans had long prophesied that a saviour would come from across the Howling Sea, walking upon the water and bringing foreign warriors. They were responsible for the magics that had driven the Siabhlaigh back, and they now gave sanctuary to the one the Shaper had sent to them.

The Réig Proclaimed
The tribes of Uasa gathered from all over the marshes and wetlands to welcome the Réig and their gallóglaigh. The tribes were of all species, bound together by the bonds their ancestors had made with the water spirits for protection, and the gallóglaigh staying in their halls and huts swiftly made their own bonds and compacts, some of them joining the tribes themselves even in the first few nights. For this reason Uasa has since been the home of every gallóglaigh band, to recognise the hospitality and bonds of friendship and love the tribes offered them when they first arrived in Tirneach. The congress of tribes was the first to use the title of Réig; the name from their own legends. From that point on the Uasaigh became the Réig’s staunchest allies, spreading the word far and wide to the Shaper’s children living in Tirneach that the reign of the Gwyllt would finally come to an end, and harrying the Siabhlach armies that roamed across the Grey Marches seeking the Réig and the army they had brought.

These stories attracted the attention even of the Saoi of Draíod, who had their own informants to tell them of things of the surface world. The Council of Saoi was first formed in centuries past to overcome the madness of the evil king of Draíod, and most of the Saoi utterly rejected the idea that any one person would rule over others, reminding their fellows of the vows their people had sworn. A small faction were intrigued however, and decided to send the Réig a challenge in secret: “Walk the darkest and most perilous tunnels of the caverns of Draíod alone, and find your way to the centre of power”. Although their thanes counselled against it, the Réig accepted. They went with their foster siblings through Vercontin’s Pass, fighting fearsome Gwyllt creatures as they went. In the Valley of Draíod, the Réig found a way down into the caverns through communion with the Shaper. There they left their companions, going on alone as the Saoi demanded.

To this day the exact path trodden by the Réig is not known, but from the tales told afterwards many have tried to reproduce the feat and the resulting pilgrimage has become known as the Way of Wisdom. After five days and five nights, the Réig emerged alive and unbeaten at the centre of the mystic leylines that suffuse Draíod, where the full Council of the Saoi had assembled to meet them. Immediately as the Réig entered, the Saoi began to challenge their knowledge of the mystic arts, the cosmos and Shaper Themself. The answers the Réig gave were not only knowledgeable, but imparted a deep wisdom and compassion, and they shook the Council to the core. Here was one who would use the power given to them to free the land of Tirneach, and not simply hoard knowledge for its own sake, or oppress their fellow beings. Voices among the Council began to call for the Réig to be acclaimed as their leader, and finally every Saoi swore allegiance to the Réig and their holy cause.

The Gwyllt Undone
When the Réig returned to Uasa, the full force of the Saoi returned with them. Combined with the wily Uasach tribes and the valorous bands of gallóglaigh, the Réig’s forces would be a match for the hosts of Siabhal. The Réig still spoke of peace with Siabhal however, and the unification of Tirneach through bonds of loyalty, not blood. Their thanes, the tribal leaders and the Saoi all counselled that Siabhal should be conquered, but the Réig could not be persuaded.

One of the Réig’s foster siblings was called Sheoran, and because of the fierce love he bore for the Réig and his rage that the Réig’s great plan might be thwarted, he took matters into his own hands. Contacting several of Siabhal’s generals by stealth, he brought them under the roof of the long hall he had built after marrying into one of the Uasach tribes, feigning that he would betray the Réig. Once they were lulled by food and drink, Sheoran and his warriors slew them all and their attendants. Sheoran was known as Sheoran the Cold forever more for his act of cold blooded murder, and the house named Díonrua, for the blood that was spilled beneath its roof. Sheoran was brought before the Réig, and executed by the Réig’s own hand for what they had done, despite their childhood together.

Sheoran’s terrible deed drove the leadership of Siabhal into a rage, and they marched on Uasa in force. The Réig’s armies met them in the Grey Marches, and as the two armies stood across the field from each other the Réig stepped forward. They spoke in the voice of the Shaper Themself, asking the Siabhlaigh how long they intended to stand alone against the Gwyllt, when another way was possible. The voice of the Shaper rang out all across Tirneach, and every living thing could hear it…even the Gwyllt. In response, a great howl of terror, rage and hunger rang forth, as every Gwyllt creature turned its loathsome face towards the borderlands between Siabhal and Uasa.

The Gwyllt came from everywhere, shrieking from the skies and boiling up from under the earth, and of course scuttling from the forests and hidden places where they always lurk. They were intent on killing the Réig and thereby undoing the Shaper’s influence upon this world. The armies of Siabhal stood by at first, watching as the Réig’s armies fought to protect their leader against the Gwyllt horde, but as they watched and saw the Réig strike the Gwyllt down so heroically, they began to wonder. In every act and word, the Réig was like one of the Hundred Heroes reborn, and their voice was the voice of the Shaper Themself. Were the prophecies of the Uasaigh true after all?

Even the anointed warriors of the Réig, coated head to toe in Gwyllt gore, began to tire, but the Siabhlaigh came to their rescue. Led by Princess Seasmain upon a white charger, the Siabhlaigh called aloud the mottos of their houses, voiced in ancient times by the Hundred Heroes who gave them their names. When they had cleared the Gwyllt, they found the Réig untouched, standing surrounded by their slaughtered foes, and shining with the light of the Shaper, revealed now as the Shaper’s instrument in the world. Seasmain along with the leaders of the other Realms knelt in reverence.

The power of the Gwyllt was shattered at that great battle, which became known as the Final Battle of the War of Unification. From that day on Draíod, Siabhal and Uasa fought as one under the Réig. The unified armies brought Baol into the fold soon after, since the fractious land of Baol had no true leadership or opposition to stand in their way. All the peopled lands of Tirneach were now under the Réig’s sway, and the leaders were summoned to Uasa.

Five Realms Under the Shaper
There, the Réig proclaimed that the land of Tirneach would now be called the Five Realms. They named their foster sister Socar, who had always served so loyally and courageously, as first Iarla of Baol, and charged her with uniting the divided Realm. They named the wisest of the Saoi, Teanntas, as first Iarla of Draíod. They named Seasmain, who set aside her claim to the Kingdom of Siabhal by right of descent, as first Iarla of Siabhal. They named no Iarla of Uasa, as that would be their own Realm. In recognition of the foresight and piety of the people of Uasa the Réig would become one of them.

Last of all, the Réig put out a challenge. Five Realms they had named, and yet there were not Five Realms. To the south of Uasa lay the Great Forest, the domain of the Gwyllt. The Réig sought the bravest warriors to risk their lives in beating back the Shaper’s enemies, and the enemies of all mortal kind. The first to answer the summons would be named Iarla of Bruid, and charged with defeating the Gwyllt wherever they could be found, and creating a new Realm from the wilderness. Every warrior who had answered the Réig’s summons called out their assent, but first and loudest was the Réig’s foster brother Misniú. He was named first Iarla of Bruid, and would lead a host of willing warriors to be his first Riders.

The Iarlas swore oaths of fealty to the Réig that day, oaths that would bind them and the Realms they ruled. The oaths were more powerful even than those sworn by the gallóglaigh, with greater rewards and more terrible punishments. The Réig said that in five years’ time the oaths must be sworn again, to ensure that hearts were true and that the Realms would not suffer under tyrants. It has been thus ever since, though there have been those wayward Iarlas who have forsaken their oaths…always to dire consequences.

The Five Realms were unified, and the Shaper’s vision for Tirneach was realised. For many years the first Réig ruled in wisdom and strength, opposing the Gwyllt and forging the many different people of Tirneach into one under the Shaper’s word. Even the first Réig was mortal, however, and after many years they departed this world to live in the Shaper’s embrace. Those who would follow held but a portion of the first Réig’s power, but still surpassed all other mortal children of the Shaper.

The Réig Today
The Réig is the ultimate ruler of the Five Realms. The ancient oaths made to the Réig are what bind the Realms together, and everyone from the Iarlas of the Realms to the lowliest peasant owes their allegiance to the Réig. In the martial society of the Five Realms, the Réig is expected to be the greatest of generals and a heroic warrior in their own right. They are also the prime instrument of the Shaper’s will in Tirneach, just as the first Réig brought the word and power of the Shaper to a land benighted by the Gwyllt. The Réig must also rule with wisdom and with justice, for although their word is law, there is precedent for a tyrannical Réig to be deposed and replaced.

The First Oath that bands of gallóglaigh swear is to the Réig, to serve and obey them above all others. The Réig allows the gallóglaigh to work for the Iarlas and other nobility throughout the Realms, but they take a tithe of the money that the gallóglaigh earn this way. Only by serving the Réig directly can the gallóglaigh keep all of their pay, and only the most renowned bands can hope to have that honour.

The Réig’s seat is at Corroch in the Realm of Uasa. Uasa is the only Realm not to have an Iarla, instead the Réig and their counsellors rule the Realm directly along with the Five Realms as a whole. The Citadel of the Shaper is in Corroch also, and the Réig is advised by the Council of Prelates, the six heads of the Five Orders, in both spiritual and temporal matters. The gallóglaigh have their headquarters in Corroch. They often vye with House Roaring Thunder, the Drakeblooded House that serves as the Réig’s bodyguards, to show who are the Réig’s most dedicated servants.

Until recently the Réig was Maeláine Uí Chonchobhair, a human whose family hails from the Realm of Siabhal. She became Réig ten years ago after the death of her uncle, Réig Airt Ua Chonchobhair. She showed her mettle many times in her reign so far, most notably leading the gallóglaigh bands to victory at the Battle of Traitor’s Tears. She was always considered ambitious, and throughout her reign was followed by rumours that she was looking outwards beyond the coast of Tirneach to expand her rule. Some even whispered that she had gone so far as to travel secretly to the Shaper’s Steps archipelago off the northeastern coast, to speak with the elders there and bring them under her protection. But such rumours have always dogged Clann Chonchobhair, despite decades of wise rule some people cannot forget that they are human and therefore prone to reckless action.

Other Réigs in Recent History
Airt Ua Chonchobhair was the current Réig’s predecessor, and her maternal uncle. He ruled for thirteen years, having succeeded his aunt, Seocha Uí Chonchobhair, who ruled for ten. His rule was characterised by growing discontent among the Iarlas, who saw a Réig trading on his aunt’s reputation and making ever diminishing returns. Airt was focused on the acquisition of knowledge, it is said that he walked the Way of Wisdom five times as Réig, an auspicious number indeed. He bestowed great influence on the Order of Teachers, who used the Réig’s coffers to establish schools and wardhouses in parts of Tirneach where they had never been known before. Towards the end of his reign, however, he displayed little wisdom. He antagonised the Iarlas, alienated his own Riders, and declined to even send a second to answers the numerous challenges he received. He died suddenly in the end, far too suddenly for a human in his forties, and many say that his niece had a hand in it.

Duarcan the Grim was technically only a regent, but he presided over the Five Realms for longer than the three Réigs who preceded him. A Drakeblooded of House Roaring Thunder, Duarcan assumed the throne when his charge died in the middle of the night with no heirs. Some say it was a foul ritual concocted by the Réig’s enemies that did the deed, since they were too cowardly to face the Réig in battle. Others say it was Duarcan himself that ended the Réig’s life, since the Drakeblooded had grown tired of seeing misrule from those he was sworn to protect. Over six years, Duarcan held the Five Realms in an iron grip. The Iarlas were ordered to send hostages to Corroch, and the only Iarla to refuse was soon deposed and killed on the field of battle. The people lived in fear, but they were at least safe from the lawlessness that had stalked the land in the decade preceding Duarcan’s regency. Eventually, Duarcan held a tourney to decide who would succeed him. A young Seocha Uí Chonchobhair rose above all other contenders and took the throne…and was canny enough to install a new head of House Roaring Thunder to protect her and her family.

Leamh the Long-Lived was the last Leasiar to hold the throne. In her forty years of rule, one of the longest reigns of all time, she oversaw major changes in the Five Realms. It was according to her Great Design that the canals were developed in Uasa, and the narrow Vercontin’s Pass that winds through the Ring Mountains and connects Uasa and Draíod was widened into a proper road to allow movement of traders and soldiers both. These projects took many years, and only a Leasiar with Leamh’s tenacity could have seen them through. These seismic changes to the landscape of Tirneach caused many to murmur that Leamh was daring to question the Shaper’s work, moulding the Realms into her image of what they should be rather than acknowledging the beauty of the Shaper’s design. Nevertheless she held to her Design, and the gallóglaigh bands were very active during her reign in stamping out rebellion and the Gwyllt. She died quietly in the end, her centuries-long life finally coming to a close. Of course there are rumours that instead she lives still, having taken the Path of Many Candles, but that would be impossible to prove. After her reign came the Time of Tumult, with three Réigs in ten years, but her legacy still stands in a land forever changed by her Design.

Appointment of the Réig
The Réig title is not an inherited one and, as such, the transition between one Réig to the next can be rife with controversy. The title most often passes to the appointed successor of the previous Réig, which is almost always a member of their family. To be acknowledged as Réig you must have a high level of both martial and political skill to keep enemies and competitors at bay, though a lack of aptitude in one field can be compensated for by a surplus in the other.

An aspiring Réig needs the approval of those they will rule over but in practice certain elements have far more sway than others. The major families of Tirneach, the high society of Corroch, the Iarlas, and powerful Thanes will want to have their say.

Another key player is the Council of Prelates, the six heads of the five orders of Cinnire, who will wish to ensure that any potential Réig is paragon of the Shapers virtues with whom they can have a good working relationship.

And finally, there's House Roaring thunder, the drakeblooded house sworn to the service and protection of the Réig. The head of house Roaring Thunder is responsible for presiding over the coronation of the Réig and in the past this has been used a blocking factor. Following a run of weak Réigs and the turmoil they produced, Duarcan the Grim, former head of house Roaring Thunder, refused to crown a new Réig until he was personally convinced a suitable candidate had been found. He ruled Tirneach as regent for six years.

Blurb of Downtime Event
Two years have passed Out of Character (OOC), and we have decided that rather than try to pick up exactly where we left off, events in Tirneach will have proceeded and two years will pass in-game.

We invite all players to take part in this special time skip downtime, which will have 2 sections. The first section is live now, covering the events of the first few months of the time between our last game A Season of Seeking in September 2019, and our next game which we hope to announce soon for late summer 2022.

This will remain open for two weeks (closing 23.59, 22 April 2022). We will then have a second section for the remaining time of the time skip, with options affected by the results of this section.

We would like to explicitly state that none of these options will result in your character being removed from the gallóglaigh, or be unable to be part of the band at the start of the next game. While the members of the band may be doing very different things over the next 1-2 years in game time, all Player Characters will be members of the band for the next uptime game.

Part One
The time for the band’s next scheduled mission in Ardbealach, Draíod, is drawing near. But as you make your preparations to travel, shocking news reaches you:

The Réig is dead.

News is full of rumour but from what you can gather, Réig Maeláine was on an official visit to the island of the Shaper’s Steps with some of her personal guard and she has been killed, and while you hear wild speculation on the how and why, no other details of her death are available. Unfortunately she has not named an heir and there are no clear successors.

Cian Treebreaker, head of House Roaring Thunder and now acting Regent of Tirneach calls on all active Galloglaigh to return to Corroch to act as a peacekeeping force in the capital until a new Reig can be named.

Almost immediately after this news reaches you, even more troubling news arrives: another revolt is taking place in Baol. Mairi of Clann Niamha has declared that the wealth of the lowlands belongs to the highlands, that Baol is the new capital of Tirneach, and that she is the new Reig.

Although Mairi's followers loudly proclaim her legitimacy, she does not appear to have support beyond the limits of Baol..Some members of her own clann, as well as members of the other highland Clanns have rallied to her call, murdering some Riders, guild members, and others loyal to the existing order and looting the lowlands in earnest, as well as any highlanders not joining their movement. Iarla Dalles (also of Clann Niamha) has put out a call for aid in putting down this rebellion.

And still, the date your band promised to be in Ardbealach looms near and reports of Gwyllt marching on Draíod continue to come in.

Which leaves the question: What do you do?

Part One Options
*I fulfill my duty as a Galloglach and heed the Regent’s call to return and guard the capital along with the Thane of the band.
*I fulfill my duty as a Galloglach and carry out the mission in Draíod as hired.
*I fulfill my duty as a Galloglach and go to Baol to help fend off the uprising.

Part Two (OOC Info)
Below are the outcomes of the first Timeskip and the options for the second Timeskip period. The second Timeskip period covers roughly a year and a half of in game time. There will be a period of a couple of months in game time unaccounted for between the end of this Timeskip and the next Game (A Season of Renewal), intended to allow for the possibility of IC socials. We would like to clarify that none of the options below will cause your character to be unable to be part of the band at the start of the next game.

Part One Results and Part Two Preamble
The few months following the announcement of the Réig’s death were a period of great turmoil and with no named successor, Regent Cian Treebreaker tried to maintain stability until a new Réig could be confirmed. While many voiced quiet concerns about his advanced age and the risk of leaving Tirneach without a ruler, those concerns soon turned out to be misplaced, as some remaining members of the Riverborn sect organised killings across Corroch. While Gallóglaigh and House Guards tried to maintain order, some Riverborn managed to sneak through their thin stretched ranks and assassinate the Regent Cian Treebreaker. Another member of House Roaring Thunder, Tiergan, managed to slay the assassins as they attempted to leave the grounds. Through a combination of personal charisma and some well judged shows of force, Tiergan claimed the position of Head of House Roaring Thunder and with it, Regent of Tirneach. Though continuity was maintained, the transition further delayed the confirmation of legitimate Réig candidates and caused widespread unease through the waterways of Uasa and beyond.

In Baol, Mairi of clann Niamha staged an attempt to claim the throne through violent disregard of tradition. Malcontent highlanders from all Clanns flocked to her call and savagely murdered any who opposed them. Highland and lowland Riders alike were gutted and dragged through their Ridings behind horses to intimidate the rest into supporting “Réig” Mairi. Despite this, Iarla Dalles of Clann Niamha rallied opposition to her and put out the call for aid. Gallóglaigh from several bands answered her call, including members of Cumhacht na Réig. Some Gallóglaigh protected Riders, Cinnirí, other public figures, and their families from coercion and assassination. Others kept watch, gathered information, and lobbied prominent figures to oppose Mairi’s campaign of terror.

With the aid of the Friendly Hand Trade Guild, the Gallóglaigh rallied under Rider Tiernan Mac Aonghusa and slowly turned the tide on Mairi. After several weeks of protecting ridings and repelling ambushes, Tiernan’s forces went on the attack. Several members of Cumhact na Réig had foruitously scouted the area months beforehand, allowing them to pinpoint the routes the rebels would likely take and set up ambushes of their own, catching the rebels between members of Cumhacht na Réig and the Friendly Hand guild on one side, and loyal members of Clanns Aongusa and Niamha on the other. Mairi Ni Niamha, now known as Mairi the Brute, was finally pinned down and slain by Tiernan at the Battle of Scarlet Heather. Many of her key supporters were also killed in the battle and the majority of those remaining surrendered soon after.

At the same time, many other members of Cumhacht na Réig travelled to Ardbealach, Draíod, to complete a mission arranged before the former Réig died. What was anticipated to be several days of guarding a ritual circle from Gwyllt attack turned into weeks of siege warfare as an unprecedented host of Caorthainnigh assault the ritual circle outside Ardbealach. Scholars of religion and magic among the defenders found the scent of burnt meat clinging in their nostrils and acrid grease in their mouth long before the battle brought those foul sensations to all present.

Reliable accounts put the Gwyllt’s numbers in the hundreds, more dramatic accounts say thousands, and it seemed as if no sooner had one been felled that three more had taken to the field, with even those slain rising shortly thereafter as Sluagh. While many Gallóglaigh, torchbearers, and local militia fought the Gwyllt directly, other Gallóglaigh kept careful watch over the area, ensuring that supply lines were maintained and organising to feed the defenders, and working to keep morale from breaking.

While the Gallóglaigh held the main circle a scouting party of Caorthainigh found a nearby secondary ritual circle and began performing their foul rite. Thankfully, some Gallóglaigh of the band had scouted the area in advance and quickly called attention to it, disrupting the ritual before it could reach its unholy conclusion, though some witnesses close to the lake at the time swore that the waters began to boil and reek of sulphur.
The campaign was a drawn out affair, and the enemy hordes were daunting, so some began trapping vast quantities of the Sluagh and Gwyllt corpses yet to rise in disused tunnels before sealing them off, trapping them in the hopes of keeping the enemy forces at a manageable level.

While scouting nearby mountain passes for likely tunnels to use for this purpose, some Weeping members of the band discovered a tunnel locked with a heavy metal grate, and could just make out the sounds of people calling for help. Investigating inside they found an abandoned laboratory with over a dozen non-Weeping Corpses, three corpses of Weeping of various species, and three still living Weeping. The survivors told of a Linebreaker Vartach who was experimenting on them and killing people they had abducted until one captive, a Fathach, rose as a Weeping and managed to surprise and fight off the Vartach and the one remaining guard, who fled and locked them inside. The three surviving Weeping were rescued and evacuated below ground, away from the battle with the Gwyllt.

After weeks of holding the lake side circle and frustrating Gwyllt attempts to perform their ritual, one night the ley lines shifted ever so slightly, disempowering all ritual circles within a mile of the lake. Their morale seemingly sapped, the rest of the Gwyllt in the area were more easily put down and packed into disused tunnels. After the ritual circle moved, those band members sensitive to matters of religion and magic could no longer sense the smell and taste of burning ash.

Elsewhere, attempts to reach the Shaper’s Steps failed repeatedly, as harsh storms smashed any ship that tried to make the crossing, preventing any investigation into the former Réig’s death.

Causing further chaos in Corroch, members of the self proclaimed Breaker Heresy stormed the headquarters of House Roaring Thunder, claiming that if they exterminated them then no Réig could ever again be crowned. A group of them managed to hack their way into the room where Regent Tiergan was consulting with the Prelates. In a desperate skirmish, Tiergan managed to hold them off by arcane force long enough for Gallóglaigh to come to his aid, though he was badly injured in the process. After a fierce and bloody battle that left several waterways choked with the corpses of Breaker Heretics, the combined forces of House Roaring Thunder and those galloglaigh who heeded the Regent’s call for defenders were able to quash the assassination attempt while sustaining no losses and only few injuries that were quickly healed.

Over the months, Gwyllt attacks became more rampant and aggressive across the Five Realms, something that many attributed to the absence of a Réig. New and previously unknown variants of Gwyllt began to appear across the land with many specifically targeting Cinnirí and Gallóglaigh, putting many smaller communities at risk of losing the services and structures they rely on, and their only defence against the usual threats of bandits, the undead, and beasts.

Amidst the public outcry for a new Réig to be named dozens of would-be Réigs announced themselves, many previously unknown and citing a vague and poorly defined kinship to the previous Réig. A few candidates stand out from the crowd for their deeds, qualifications, or support.

The first of these is Éalthna Ni Órfhaiche, the Leasiar Iarla of Siabhal for the last eight decades, and one of its wealthiest landowners. Formerly an active Cinnire of the Order of Teachers, they left active service long ago to devote their time to tending to the matters of ruling Siabhal. Their skills in statecraft and productive compromise are credited with bringing increasing success and prosperity to Siabhal. They count the majority of the Ruby families and some significant church figures amongst their most vocal supporters. They’re seen as a steady hand who will guide Tirneach out of this terrible turmoil and back to prosperity.

The second is Tiernan Mac Aongusa, the Human Rider of Dhaloch in Baol, vanquisher of the Bloodwater Spirits and slayer of Mairi the Brute and her forces at the battle of Scarlet Heather. He has the support of the guilds, and has managed to gain the approval of large numbers of both Highlanders and Lowlanders, who recount his great deeds of derring-do and martial cunning with varying degrees of enthusiasm and begrudgery. Fresh off his victories in Baol, he is seen as a hero of Tirneach, ready to lead the charge to push back all those who would assault the Shaper’s favoured land.

Lastly, from Draíod comes an unlikely figure: Amhlaoibh, a Weeping Fathach rescued from the laboratory of a Linebreaker Vartach by Cumhacht na Réig near Ardbealach. In their first life they had been the lifelong servant, guard and confidant of one of the Saoi. Lured into the clutches of this Linebreaker by some of their minions, they were murdered but immediately rose back up as a Weeping, thwarting the Linebreaker’s schemes and driving them off.

Most significantly, they have apparently risen with their soul bearing a Mark of Destiny, which the Saoi of Draíod hail as an omen that they have been sent to lead Draíod (and Tirneach as a whole) into a new golden age and to oppose the menaces of the undead and gwyllt (and Linebreakers.) So far their most vocal supporters are the Saoi of Draíod, though they are attracting attention from across the five realms. Following a period of such fear and uncertainty, their dramatic tale and the Saoi’s pronouncement of their remarkable destiny has many looking to them as a symbol of hope and rebirth, ready to lead Tirneach to something new and glorious.

In light of the ongoing Gwyllt threat, once the treachery of Mairi the Brute is resolved, the Regent and Iarla’s of each Realm issue a joint edict ordering all galloglaigh to travel to a realm capital and remain there to ensure security and stability until the new Réig is appointed.

The current Thane of Cumhacht na Réig, Declan Ó Ceallaigh, makes it known that he only came out of retirement as a favour to Réig Méalaine, and will be retiring again the second there is a new Réig in place. However, he quietly reassures members of Cumhact na Réig that any Réig who isn’t an eejit will leap at the chance to reform the band under some highly prestigious Gallóglaigh Thane for how auspicious it will look, to show that normal order is resuming and to display their strength.

Bards and filí across Tirneach, always keen to capture public interest, begin telling stories and singing songs of these events and those who were present. It’s soon well known which Galloglaigh were where and what deeds they did during this time of turmoil:

Part Two Results
The two years following the death of Maeláine Uí Chonchobhair were a time of great fear and uncertainty. In the absence of a Réig, the Gwyllt ran rampant across Tirneach, terrorising the people and forcing them to dedicate themselves to little besides the defence of their communities. The first summer without a Réig was a trial, the second proved to be a harrowing of the Relams. Many, among the learned and the superstitious alike, proclaimed this an ill omen and a clear sign that a new Réig, any Réig, was needed immediately to bring peace and restore order. Others counselled patience, warning that no one should want a return to the chaos of three Réigs in fewer than six years (or, perhaps more importantly, the six years of draconian order under Duarcan the Grim that followed it). In any case, Tiergan was unmoved by calls for expedience as he judged the would-be Réigs and weighed their support and aptitudes.

“It’s bad luck not to have a Réig. First Réig took down the Gwyllt, what do you think they’ll do when there’s none?” – Mothó, shepherd of Bruid

The Realms’ capitals received reinforcement from the Gallóglaigh, though not all of them as much as they would have liked or needed. Favouritism came into play as many Thanes sought to protect their own home Realms while others simply marched to whatever capital was nearest when the call came. Some bands, which were between campaigns or taking rest when they received the order, ended up scattered across several Realms as their members took it upon themselves to decide where their help was needed most. A few bands even experienced serious schisms over the issue of which capital deserved their aid. Many Gallóglaigh took the time to have themselves formally transferred to another band so that they could serve in the capital closest to their families and loved ones, but a handful simply took their own leave and joined up with bands known to not ask too many questions.

“I’ll never forget it. My kids and I were running from some awful things that wanted to eat us, and out of the woods come two warriors, howling a battle cry. They saved our lives. Must have been Golden Knives, they had these tarnished brooches on in the shape of daggers.” – Ualainn, farmer of Baol

Some folk who lived in isolated and rural parts of Tirneach fled their homes to seek shelter in the better defended cities but for those who remained there was one unusual source of support. Shortly after the call to defend the capitals, the Regent announced that it had been discovered that the late Réig’s Gallóglaigh band, the Golden Knives, had never formally been decommissioned after she took the crown, and that he recognised Aster Ua Larkspur as the standing Thane of that band. It seemed a strange thing for the Regent to bother with amid all the turmoil but shortly afterwards open letters were received in many of the towns and villages around Tirneach. They claimed that Aster had been given authority over all Gallóglaigh who had been separated from their bands and ordered them to join them to receive further orders. The letters also specified that any Gallóglach travelling to meet Aster was to do all they could to ensure the safety of the roads and outlying settlements as they travelled. The orders did not specify Aster’s location.

“I’ll never forget it. I was on the road, surveying my own fields if you don’t mind, when these two ruffians show up out of the woods. They blocked my way and demanded that I pay the Regent’s Tax, or they couldn’t guarantee my safety. Must have been those Golden Knives, they had these shining brooches in the shape of daggers.” – Cillian, farmer of Baol

The Fate of Corroch (Uasa)
Regent Tiergan put out the call for Gallóglaigh to reinforce the capital city of Corroch, and enough heeded his summons to hold the Gwyllt at bay. Bands of Gallóglaigh co-ordinated the defence of Uasa’s roads and waterways and for the most part held the Gwyllt away from the city. Those who were tasked with keeping peace in the city witnessed something disturbing however as many of the fishers who supplied Corroch with a good portion of its sustenance began to act strangely. Fights would break out between friends who’d worked together amiably for decades, often turning violent. Others claimed they were being watched or followed, often accusing those closest to them of spying on them and trying to reveal their secrets (whether they had any secrets of not). Investigation revealed that all those afflicted had caught one of the strange, one-eyed fish that had recently been sighted in the waters. The creatures were immediately revealed to be Gwyllt and their paranoia-inducing effects seemed to be temporary so long as further contact with them was avoided. The presence of the Gwyllt fish made the vital work of the fishers a tense and unpleasant affair.

“I’ve fished in these waters since I was a child, never had to watch my haul so closely before.” – Borgach, fisher of Uasa

However, the schemes of the Gwyllt soon turned out to be the least of the Uasaigh’s problems. While surviving members of the Riverborn and the Breaker Heresy continued to make a nuisance of themselves, a new group soon eclipsed them. Calling themselves “Lobhan’s Legacy”, they claimed to be champions of Siabhal and called on the Regent to immediately anoint Iarla Ni Órfhaiche as Réig, appoint “any backwater fishtickler” as Iarla of Uasa, and move the Crown Realm to Siabhal. Naturally, the Regent disregarded their demands as irritating bluster. That was until the very next night, when the group arranged the murders of several Uasaigh Riders. A gold crown splattered with red dots was left painted on the walls at each of the murder scenes. Iarla Ni Órfhaiche fervently disavowed this group and their actions and began a rigorous hunt for the perpetrators.

While investigations into these killings were underway, Corroch suffered its most concerted attack from the Gwyllt For several days beforehand it had been reported that more and more of the unsettling one-eyed Gwyllt fish were turning up in the waterways around Corroch. The Gallóglaigh who had been posted throughout the area around the city were quickly alerted when the creatures began to gather in turbulent shoals and merged their bodies together, forming larger and larger monstrosities with more and more glassy, staring eyes. Some of the amalgam fish creatures were destroyed by quick reacting Gallóglagh but most of them were able to swim towards the city as the warriors out on patrol rushed to keep up with them.

On the outskirts of the Corroch the creatures began once again to merge and soon a hulking, amorphous horror, covered in thousands of accusing eyes dragged itself out of the waters of Uasa and began slouching towards the Citadel of the Shaper. Several Gallóglaigh and fishers were crushed under its slimy bulk as it slid inexorably towards the Citadel, destroying boats, bridges, nets, and traps as it went. Word soon reached the defenders that Regent Tiergan was attending a meeting with the full Prelate Council in the Citadel, not that they needed any additional incentive to protect the Shaper’s Citadel from the awful Gwyllt. At first it seemed that nothing could deter the monster from its course. Under a hail of blows from the warriors assembled, it never slowed or changed its course but lashed out all round it with fins and tails that emerged and dissolved from its disgusting form. Gallóglaigh whose skin came into contact with the ichor of the beast were immediately affected by an intense and violent paranoia, turning upon their allies.

Eventually, with the creature coming within an arrow-shot of the Citadel, several mages began casting Fear over it. While the great beast initially resisted, eventually the effect took hold, causing the monster to erupt in ichor as every individual Gwyllt fish making it up tried to flee a different way. So armed, the Gallóglaigh were able to drive the creature away from the Citadel before it could reform into its full size. Badly wounded, and kept from its prey, dozens of the smaller horrors dissolved back into the waters from whence they came. Despite the investigations, the true identities of the Legacy remain unknown. Sightings of the Gwyllt fish have become rare but they have not disappeared entirely. For the Uasaigh of Corroch, this was a time of anxiety for coming threats and longing for a new Réig deserving of their loyalty.

The Fate of Barr (Siabhal)
Traditionally safe and secure Barr attracted the concern of few Gallóglaigh and the Riders and Ruby Families of Siabhal concerned themselves primarily with the defence of historic Iomra over the actual capital. Though Siabhal has typically suffered less from the Gwyllt threat than the other Realms, this drastically changed in the absence of the Réig. Ridings such as Sciatrian were cut off for months. Massive Gwyllt formed from crumbling marble and hosts of smaller creatures reported to look like ghoulish scarecrows accompanied common Gwyllt monstrosities as they prowled the Ridings of Siabhal. The Gallóglaigh in Barr found themselves spending most of the long season co-ordinating the meagre forces present to stretch as far as they could. Patrols through the farmlands worked desperately to keep the fields safe enough to be worked as they were meanced not just by Gwyllt but by mortal bandits and looters as well as vermin, grown bold in the chaos. As the second summer began, the already severe Gwyllt attacks spiked sharply, and the harried Gallóglaigh were finally overwhelmed.

A terrible Gwyllt mockery of a massive tower burst without warning through Barr’s city square as the sun reached its midday peak, and immediately began to crumble and collapse. Dozens of bystanders, including Iarla Ní Órfhaiche and several Riders were caught in the torrent of debris. Fortunately there were just enough Gallóglaigh to manage the crowd and to fight off the smaller Gwyllt that poured out of the broken tower. Drina of House Roaring Thunder was able to drag the Iarla to safety, where she could be stabilised before she bled out. As the dust settled, the Gallóglaigh heard a terrible sound in the distance and saw on the horizon that Iomra itself had fared even worse. They looked on in horror as one of the three storied towers of Iomra, built by Leasiar during the old Kingdom of Siabhal, was smashed to pieces and fell from view.

“How bold these creatures have grown, if they can strike at the very Heart of the Realms. They will never stop.” – Búbha Ní Shiúin, courtier of Iomra

The assembled Gallóglaigh managed to save who they could among the Ruby Families, though fires scorched many of the fields, and barrithe and other pests devoured others. The local Riders and Gallóglaigh on hand were able to organise logistics and guard enough to avoid the threat of famine in Siabhal. However, many merchants cancelled shipments to other Realms or sharply raised their prices, citing shortages and increased demand, which led to their neighbours contemplating taking by force what they couldn’t buy with coin. For the Siabhlaigh of Barr, this was a time of loss and fear for what will come next, even as some saw opportunity in the crisis.

The Fate of Uaircinn (Baols)
Although the Treachery of Mairi the Brute was put to an end, many were still concerned about Baol’s stability, and enough Gallóglaigh mustered on Uaircinn to relieve the city’s militia from the Gwyllt onslaught. As the city became ever more crowded by those seeking shelter, Gallóglaigh in Uaircinn found themselves struggling to keep the peace within the city as much as they fought to keep safe its walls. Disputes between clanns, between guilds, between Highlanders and Lowlanders, and between those who had fought for Iarla Dalles and those who were suspected of still harbouring loyalty to Mairí threatened to tear the city apart from within.

“I have seen the Amber Hall, shining in the night. It calls to me, and I must answer. You counsel patience, but would you counsel forgiveness if I lost such a chance?” – A note left by Ian Mac Donnchadha, before his disappearance

“It’s clear to me now that only some terrible Gwyllt creature would set such a ruinous rate, and I have the word of two Torchbearers who agree. I am sorry for your loss, but you must now see that the agreement between your guildmate and me is null and void.” – A fragment of a letter sent to the Friendly Hand guild

Particularly vigilant Gallóglaigh who were securing a major meeting between the Trade Guilds and representatives from a number of Highland clanns unmasked “Casey”, head of the Friendly Hand guild and a hero of the battle of Scarlet Heather, as a Gwyllt imposter. The Gwyllt was cut down before it could escape but not before it drew a twisted horn and blew a blast of sound that caused fear and nausea in all around it. This was the opening salvo in a terrible battle as more Gwyllt impostors revealed themselves and opened the gates to the city. Gwyllt poured through the streets and the ensuing battle was long and bloody, claiming many lives, including that of the real Casey and Etain, head of the Polished Smile Trade Guild. Tiernan Mac Aongusa was almost counted among the dead, were he not spotted by Gallóglaigh, lying face down in a side-street, a poisoned blade stuck in his back. In the aftermath of the battle the city was searched thoroughly for any more Gwyllt impostors but none were found. Still, suspicion remained, as did a sense of uncertainty over how long some people have been replaced for and some embarrassment over how the leaders of the city had been manipulated. Mistrust and a paralysing caution slowed down the appointment of new Guild Heads, which in turn hampered trade and the supply of vital goods across the Lowlands and other Realms.

The Highlands had their own tragedy to contend with, as the heirs of every courtly Clann (except for the wandering heir of Clann Mac Tire) received signs and visions of a translucent amber castle in a rocky field, ringing with the sounds of laughter, song and battle. They became certain that these visions would lead them to the site of the Amber Hall, where they would find long lost power that could defend Baol from the Gwyllt. Even the scions of long rival clanns worked together to decipher the visions and reveal the location hidden within.

Their elders counselled patience, to allow their scholars and those visiting from among the Gallóglaigh to study their accounts and for Gallóglaigh to be sent in arms to scout the area first. Full of headstrong ideas of destiny, many of the heirs ignored this advice and snuck away together to follow their visions and bring the salvation of Baol. When Gallóglaigh scouts were sent after them they found only undead waiting to greet them. The grim abominations were all that was left of the heirs of the Courtly Clanns. For the Baolaigh of Uaircinn this was a time of loss and suspicion.

The Fate of Crag Oscionn (Draíod)
With the recent incursion of the Blazing Host near Ardbealach still fresh in the public memory, many Gallóglaigh answered Iarla Marblespine’s call to reinforce Crag Oscionn, capital of Draíod, against potential threats. Gallóglaigh patrolled any tunnels that led to the surface, guarding the Arcane College and the Shrine, or kept peace between spirited scholars. Though some few Gwyllt managed to find their way down below, they were soon caught by patrols and subdued easily enough for the most part. The real trouble in Crag Oscionn came from a mortal threat. Excess water in a few tunnels surrounding the Arcane College immediately caused alarm among the Draíodaigh but before anything could be done about it the trickles became torrents and tunnels began to flood. Experienced Draíodaigh tunnel dwellers had begun their calm and orderly evacuation when the halls began to ring with screams.

Tunnels once blocked off by collapse or by intention had been opened by the rushing waters and the undead thought safely contained within them, including a number of the Sluagh from the recent siege, were set loose in Crag Oscionn. The Gallóglaigh lept into action, guarding the evacuees and pinning down the abominations. The Gallóglaigh guarded the engineers who pumped the water from the tunnels and once the area was traversable once more, they were the first to enter and clear any remaining dangers. In the aftermath, evidence of sabotage was discovered and blame was laid at the foot of a gang of Broken Chains attempting to destroy the Arcane College as revenge for rejecting them.

“At first I thought it was shining cave moss. Then I saw it move. And kill.” – Slinn, Fathach of Draíod

The Arcane College was relocated to several smaller off site facilities for the months it took to clean and repair the affected areas. Some particularly observant Gallóglaigh noticed the flood had weakened supports of tunnels above, and raised concerns of sinkholes opening that could allow the Gwylt to swarm en masse from the surface directly to the Shrine of the Shaper. Many Gallóglaigh were dispatched to the surface to rid the area of the remnants of the Blazing Host as well as several roaming gangs of Knochenbriseadh, Maca Rí and a strange type of blindingly shining Gwyllt. Others helped with the repair of the tunnels below and kept ever more careful guard to prevent further acts of sabotage. For the Draíodaigh of Crag Oscionn, this was a time of vigilance and suspicion.

The Fate of Caorioc (Bruid)
Caorioc is an important trade hub, and the most northerly town in Bruid. Nowhere in Bruid is far enough away from the Great Forest to be entirely safe however, particularly at this time. Enough Gallóglaigh heeded Iarla Sionnach’s call for aid to prevent the Gwyllt and the Great Forest overtaking the settlement. They had their work cut out for them though, as more Knochenbriseadh than had ever seen before lumbered out of the forest with tree trunk clubs and battering rams to smash down the city walls. Meanwhile, mobs of Wenigadaí crept through the streets, looking to feast on unguarded supplies.

It wasn’t just Gwyllt besetting the settlement though, as the unsettled dead and fierce beasts forced out of the forest by the disturbances also had to be repelled. The nights inside the city were not much more peaceful, as Gallóglaigh had to mediate disputes between the comfortable wool merchants of Caorioc and the more rugged Bruidigh of the forest who had come to seek shelter within the city walls. With great effort and the assistance of new arrivals from Schlachtfeld (on a pilgrimage to find mighty challenges to prove their worth), they managed to keep too many people from either killing each other or dying to one of the many threats that surrounded the city.

“As I cowered in the main square of Caorioc, with laughing Krieger dispatching foul beasts all around me, I became certain that the Long Peace was finally over.” – Tarlann, scribe of Bruid

“No-one has ever seen it happen, but there are those who swear they’ve heard the trees move. I reckon the Gwyllt can herd them, like we herd sheep.” – Mothó, shepherd of Bruid

One misty moonless night, a horde of undead crawled out of the river and laid siege to the infirmary tents which had become a necessity in the city. Iarla Sionnach himself was the first to notice the approach of the awful creatures and raised the alarm. For several minutes the Iarla, his personal guard Abaigh of House Roaring Thunder, and a few of the wounded strong enough to hold spears were all that stood between the abominations and a slaughter in the infirmary camp. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for the Gallóglaigh, strengthened by the Moonlit Vigil, to arrive and lay waste to the foe and prevent the massacre. It was hard and constant work to keep Caoiroc safe and while they took solace in the faces of those they’d kept safe within the city, the Gallóglaigh looked out beyond the city’s walls at a much more dispiriting sight. The strange, inexorable trees of the Great Forest spread out northwards week by week until soon the border of the forest was scarcely south of the city itself. Many settlements were completely cut off within the sprawl of the forest, their fate entirely unknown and those who were able to reach Caoiroc brought word of a terrible creature. A new and powerful Gwyllt, with a wide and grinning maw that consumed all that it destroyed and left no remains behind it For the Bruidigh of Caoiroc this was a time of courage in the face of fear.

A New Réig at Last
Uncertainty cannot go on forever though, and this time eventually came to an end. The people of Tirneach began to lose their patience for Regent Tiergan’s caution. As the third summer without a Réig approached, the devastating attacks of the previous year loomed large in people’s memories and demands for Tiergan to recognise a candidate reached a fraught peak. Many folks began to claim that the tradition of House Roaring Thunder anointing the Réig was ceremonial only, and pressure built on the would-be Réigs to simply seize the throne and end the turmoil. Tiergan was seemingly unmoved by the threat of civil unrest, much to the alarm of his advisors.

Pretenders to the Throne were weighed and winnowed, many disregarded without serious thought, some carefully given reason to leave the capital, a few others receiving persuasive visits from warriors loyal to the Regent. The Weeping Fathach Amhlaoibh failed to gain many supporters outside of the Saoi. Finally Tiergan’s bodyguards were able to breathe a sigh of relief as the Regent announced he would recognise the winner of a duel between Iarla Éalthna Ni Órfhaiche and Rider Tiernan Mac Aongusa as Réig of Tirneach.

There was great excitement as preparations for the duel took place and many risked the dangerous journeys from outlying Ridings to come and bear witness to it. The morning of the duel was rife with rumour and suspicion. It was whispered there had been dramatic events the night before and that the Prelates of the Counsellors and the Teachers had been summoned to Iarla Ni Órfhaiche’s quarters in the dead of the night. As the appointed time for the duel arrived the Iarla was nowhere to be seen and the assembled crowd began to argue whether or not victory by default would be enough to win Tiernan the throne.

A few long minutes passed before Éalthna Ni Órfhaiche strode onto the field, resplendent in brightly polished gold armour, a worn and well cared for sword by her side. Seeming not even to notice the crowd, the Iarla walked straight to Tiernan Mac Aongusa and knelt before him. Uproar seized those gathered and even Tiernan was visibly startled by the gesture. Éalthna revealed that she had received a vision from the Shaper the night before and that she believed it was the Shaper’s will that Tiernan serve as Réig and return Tirneach to safety and prosperity. Tiernan Mac Aonghusa was crowned as Réig that very day.

As the new Réig was confirmed, Thane Ó Ceallaigh formally announced his retirement from the Gallóglaigh, to take a well earned rest running a small farm east of Urcheol. He was not alone, as more than a few Gallóglaigh were exhausted from the two years of constant vigilance and chose to leave service. Others, having been in one place for such a long time, decided to put the travelling life of a Gallóglach behind them and settle down. The promise of adventure, glory, and wealth was enough to keep many more still serving, and to tempt new recruits who had seen and benefitted from the Gallóglaigh’s presence during the Season of Uncertainty.

Réig Tiernan took early action to mobilise the Gallóglaigh bands to provide aid across the Realms where it was sorely needed. As part of this effort, he decreed that the band Cumhacht na Réig was to reunite under Thane Ualgarg Corcra, a Drakeblooded Torchbearer who had been the Cinnire-at-Arms of White Eye’s Band. The decree went out that any members of the band that still upheld the Oaths were to begin travelling to Siabhal and muster under their Thane at Barr. This was a golden opportunity for new recruits eager to prove themselves to join the band as well.

Stories of the Season of Uncertainty
Bards and filí across Tirneach, always keen to capture public interest, began telling stories and singing songs of these events and those who were present. It was soon well known which Gallóglaigh had gone where and what deeds they did there during this Season of Uncertainty (NPCs and NPC led bands are italicised):
