Below is the account of the ritual in which the Band corrected the wrongs to Siabhals heroes, from the point of view of Ultan Twinspear.
[The following is written with utmost care, on a piece of parchment stamped with Ultans sunspear brand]
My fellow Gallóglaigh of Cumhacht Na Réig,
I believe that we as an oathsworn band should be aware of all the great accomplishments we achieve under our illustrious Gallóglaigh banner. To this end I am writing this account to inform any who may not already be aware of the precise nature, intent and outcome of the ritual we undertook on Sunday of our campaign in Siabhal which quelled the distrubed spirits of the heroes of Siabhal.
I wish to make the band aware of exactly the methods which we took to ameliorate the wrong enacted upon the heroes of Siabhal and for the edification of other ritualists. I am however omitting any mission critical information which can be used against us in the future.
The crux of the ritual revolved around an artifact ‘Tome’ which magically bound and twisted these stories through simple script and enforced them with arcane means bound within the artifact. I was able to recognize the Tome for what it was due to my extensive studies in the lore of Magic and its theories. Any who have had similar studies would also be able to tell such items after but a moment of intense concentration on said item. The tome contained stories of individual heroes we faced by name. Each entry was one page long, and each entry addressed the hero by their commonly used name and title, then the stories began to diverge from standard retellings. In a different script, both color and style of writing, the stories were embellished. These embellishments caused the conjured spirits of the Heroes of Siabhal to become corrupted and twisted to make them see us, rightful enforcers of the Réig’s rule, as enemies of Siabhal. Some accounts noted that they even referred to members of our band as Gwyllt. The Tome specifically made us seem like outsiders, and naturally, this caused the heroes to perceive us as their archetypal enemies and attack our band members and, ultimately, our camp.
The arcane nature of this perversion, and the force of its compulsion, required a significant amount of magical energy to correct. Given this, the establishment of a ritual at the confluence of leylines, commonly known as a ritual circle, and the defense of such a ritual became a tactical imperative. As such, I directed for our forces to reposition to defend it.
Whilst channeling the rite, it was important to reinforce their true stories through arcane scripture. As the leading ritualist I took it upon myself to correct the stories by rewriting the salient points about their fable in the artifact Tome and later proclaiming the corrected tales aloud, since stories need to be heard, retold and remembered, as is their essence. It was important but not critical to draw on parallels between members of our band and the corrupted spirits of the heroes and to root them in the contemporary. It was also important not to deprive them of their core features and meanings such that they are no longer a story, this was achieved by involving people who could relate to these stories in the ritual, so that they could draw on their own experience and anchor the stories back in truth and legend, where they belong. After the ritual retelling of the Heros’ stories by individuals who resonated with them, the artifact Tome burst into flames and was no more.
This ritual had no required minimum of power and I suspect it would’ve worked even if someone not entirely skilled in ritual craft were to attempt to lead it. However this approach would naturally have risks and should only be conducted in the direst of circumstances. I would recommend the supervision of an adequately skilled Ritualist in the event that such untrained rituals need to be tested.
I wish to thank my contributors for trusting in me as the ritual leader and for their help in completing it as well as the rest of the band for holding steady under the assault of the twisted heroes while we righted this wrong in the ritual.
