Baol, known as the Proud Realm, lies in the west of Tirneach and is divided into highlands and lowlands.
Geography
On the Western coast of Tirneach, Baol is a land divided physically and socially between the rolling pastures of the Lowlands and the rugged mountains of the Highlands.
History
The Gallóglaigh band Cumhacht na Réig conducted a mission in Baol to guard the great Cattle Mart during 797 during the Season of Seeking.
In more recent times, Mairi of Clann Niamha has declared that the wealth of the lowlands belongs to the highlands, that Baol is the new capital of Tirneach, and that she is the new Réig.
Although Mairi's followers loudly proclaim her legitimacy, she does not appear to have support beyond the limits of Baol. Some members of her own clann, as well as members of the other highland Clanns have rallied to her call, murdering some Riders, guild members, and others loyal to the existing order and looting the lowlands in earnest, as well as any highlanders not joining their movement. Iarla Dalles (also of Clann Niamha) has put out a call for aid in putting down this rebellion.
Demographics
In the Highlands, Drakeblooded, Humans, Krieger and Forest Wildlings are the most common species to be found - while Creidhe, Leasiar and Field Wildlings are less common. It is rare indeed to see Fathach, Firetouched or Vartach in these parts of Baol.
By contrast, in the Lowlands of Baol, Creidhe, Foretouched, Field Wildlings and Humans form the most of the population, with sizeable numbers of Krieger, Leasiar and Forest Wildlings as well. The Drakeblooded are a rare sight in the lowlands (unless visiting from afar) and both Vartach and Fathach are unlikely to be found.
Culture
Scot-ish. Not Scottish. Scot-ish.
The Lowlanders are known to be hard-working, business minded and outward looking people. The Highlanders are loyal but insular folk, focussed deeply on their family and their clann. The Highlanders view the Lowlanders as duplicitous, the Lowlanders see the Highlanders as barbarous. Conflict between the two is common, especially in the form of raids sent into the prosperous Lowlands by the Highland clanns.
In the highlands of Baol, the Clanns still organise themselves along the noble lines granted by the Amber King and Queen in a time forgotten. These are sometimes called the Courtly Clanns, recalling that the originators served in the Amber Court as advisors and war-chiefs. The leadership of each Clann is a mixed affair, consisting not only of Riders but also of those who study ancient mysteries, cinnirí of the Shaper and those who can claim an unbroken line of descent from the days of the Amber Court. Nomination from the highland Clanns to become a gallóglach is often viewed with suspicion, as the Clanns tend to regard anyone of their wider allegiance to become ennobled by their service. The Baolach highlanders have a reputation for being fierce fighters so their credentials are not scrutinised too closely.
While the Highlanders are generally happy to wear whatever will keep the weather off, the Lowlanders are said to be more fashion conscious, and blue is a common colour.
